Dr. David Tyson is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. He received his Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of Florida, completing his dissertation titled: Access to Music Teacher Education for Vernacular Musicians: Faculty Perceptions of Current Practices. He earned his Master of Music in Music Education with a concentration in Jazz Studies from East Carolina University with a thesis titled: Using Yoga and Meditation to Alleviate Performance Anxiety. His Bachelor of Music in Music Education is from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. 

 

Since 2006, he has taught elementary general music, middle school band, high school rock ensemble, and collegiate music education courses. In 2011, he began teaching abroad in Strasbourg, France, teaching French students to speak English through musical theatre with Strasbourg Amities.  These efforts have been recognized by the American Consulate General with frequent invitations to the American Consulate in Strasbourg. American popular music and jazz are featured lessons for the students participating in this international camp.

Dr. Tyson’s research is focused on popular and culturally significant music integration, comprehensive musicianship, creativity, rhythm section education, and access to teacher education for non-traditional musicians. He has presented at numerous conferences and other events throughout the U.S. and internationally. Additionally, he maintains an active performance schedule in the areas of jazz, rock, and classical music and is an in-demand clinician for events such as the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Jazz Festival, New Hanover County Schools Summer Jazz Camp, North Carolina Bandmaster’s Association All-Region Jazz (East and West Regions), and the North Carolina Eastern District: All District Honors Band clinics.
